Essaouira: Bohemian Morocco

2 or 3 nights in Morocco

Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is a charming coastal town that exudes a vibrant bohemian atmosphere, especially during the summertime. It gained global recognition as a laid-back oasis and became a popular destination for hippies in the late 1960s. Renowned musicians like Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix were drawn to Essaouira, finding inspiration and serenity on its beautiful beaches. This eclectic destination caters to a diverse range of visitors, offering a mix of outdoor activities for children, trendy hotspots for the younger crowd, and plenty of leisurely exploration opportunities for those seeking a blend of both worlds. Beyond its bohemian allure, Essaouira is a captivating place filled with photogenic landscapes and an enchanting ambiance. It has served as the backdrop for notable film productions, including scenes from the third season of Game of Thrones and Oliver Stone's Alexander. More recently, Essaouira hosted Keanu Reeves during the filming of John Wick 3. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Essaouira holds exceptional historical significance. The late 18th-century fortified town showcases a fusion of contemporary European military architecture with North African context. Throughout its existence, Essaouira has been a vital trading seaport, connecting Morocco, its Saharan hinterland, and the rest of the world. While Essaouira can be enjoyed on a day trip, it is highly recommended to extend your stay for one or two nights to fully immerse yourself in its charm and allure. The experience is truly worth it.
